There was a time when Saturday mornings meant something.

As a kid growing up in the 1970s, Saturday was practically a religious experience. There was no school, no homework worth worrying about, and absolutely no reason to get dressed before noon.

In fact, my biggest responsibility in those days was getting downstairs before the cartoons started.

Armed with a gigantic bowl of Lucky Charms, I’d plant myself in front of the television and spend the next several hours watching Bugs Bunny outsmart Elmer Fudd, Wile E Coyote try to catch the Road Runner, Scooby-Doo solve another mystery, and Ultraman beat the living shit out of some poor bastard sweating inside a rubber monster suit.

Life was good.

Now, fast-forward fifty years.

It’s Saturday morning in 2026, and instead of watching cartoons, I’m patching servers at work, contemplating whether the lawn needs mowing, and wondering just how many more days I can get away with ignoring the laundry.

Somewhere along the way, Saturday went from being the greatest day of the week to becoming an unpaid second job. And nobody bothered to inform me.

Even the concept of sleeping late has changed. When I was twenty, sleeping until noon was perfectly acceptable behavior. Today, if I’m still in bed at eight, I feel like I’ve wasted half the day.

What the hell happened?

Of course, there are certain advantages to being an adult. I can eat ice cream for breakfast, stay up as late as I want, and buy whatever ridiculous thing catches my eye.

Unfortunately, I now have to pay for all of it.

And unlike my childhood, nobody’s going to magically make the laundry disappear while I’m watching television.

Still, I think we could all learn something from those Saturday mornings of our youth.

Maybe every once in a while, we should forget about the chores, pour ourselves a bowl of cereal, and spend a few hours doing absolutely nothing productive.

After all, the laundry isn’t going anywhere. Neither is the lawn.

And somewhere out there, I’m pretty sure Wile E. Coyote is still waiting for that damn package from ACME to arrive.

Happy Saturday!
